When my friends ask me what they should get for their nurseries, a Latchy Catchy always makes my shortlist.
In my previous home, we had one on every interior door! We lived in a small apartment with four interior doors in close proximity, all within five feet of my baby’s crib. I’m not joking! I knew we were going to have to do something about those doors so they wouldn’t wake the baby every five seconds. If you’ve never heard of a Latchy Catchy, I’m hoping this post can convince you that they’re a surprisingly useful tool for maximizing your baby’s sleep. (Yes, really!)
What is a Latchy Catchy?
According to the official website, a Latchy Catchy is a “door latch cover and nursery door silencer.”
The Latchy Catchy is a small padded fabric rectangle with stretchy elastics sewn to both ends. When the elastics are placed on both sides of a doorknob, the fabric rests over the door’s closing mechanism. This effectively silences the door. The makers of Latchy Catchy chose the slogan “Never hear a door slam again!” for a reason.
Why Do I Need a Latchy Catchy?
The Latchy Catchy allows you to open and close a door silently. If you want to enter and exit the room where the baby is sleeping frequently, the Latchy Catchy is a lifesaver. We shared our bedroom with our baby for the first seven months of her life. We were going in and out of that room all the time (especially because the only way to get to the bathroom was through that bedroom) and needed to keep the door shut to provide separation from the main living area.
The Latchy Catchy also prevents toddlers from locking themselves in rooms. They can pull or push the door shut, but it will not lock when the Latchy Catchy is in place.
How Many Do I Need?
You need one for the nursery door, at the very least. We initially used FOUR: one one the bedroom door, two on closet doors, and one on the bathroom door. Now that we live in a larger space and our baby is older, we use just one on her bedroom door.
You can buy bundles in a variety of designer fabrics to complement your nursery. You can buy packs of 3, 5, and 10. If you want to buy just one, that’s an option too.
I think a bundle makes a thoughtful and relatively inexpensive baby shower gift. You may have to explain what a Latchy Catchy is and how it works, but it’s the kind of unexpected gift that will be used and appreciated.
A 3 pack is a good value at $24.95.
As you can see, I take any measure I can not to wake the baby! Even with all kinds of clever measures in place, it still happens sometimes. But I do what I can! Do you have any clever tricks for keeping noise to a minimum while your baby sleeps? I know some babies love white noise!
