What I didn’t know about this stylish backpack diaper bag and why I think it’s so popular with stylish moms looking for a backpack diaper bag, updated for 2019.

I don’t know about you but I’m seeing Fawn Design diaper bags everywhere. They are often mentioned on Instagram threads when moms ask around about backpack style diaper bags. I know a new mom who carries the Fawn Design in black and a mom of two (one toddler, one infant) who carries the signature bag in brown. They are definitely beautiful bags!
As a lover of the backpack style diaper bag, the Fawn bag made it on to my wish list. I purchased the Fawn Design bag in brown for my birthday. Owning the bag and testing it out over the last few months has been really interesting. I’m going to go into detail about my experience with the bag in this honest review.
What makes Fawn Design diaper bags so stylish?
I think the number one reason Fawn Design diaper bags are popular is that they’re stylish. Though they’re made of synthetic materials, they look like real leather and have a nice buttery texture. They also feature gold hardware, which is showing up often when I search for designer bags. The shape of the bag is definitely on trend—you’ll see many leather backpacks on the market at the moment. It’s a luxurious and trendy look, which is part of why they can charge a premium price for faux leather.
The Fawn bag can be worn as a backpack or messenger-style. I most often see it worn as a backpack. I think backpack diaper bags are a trend that is here to stay, but this feature emphasizes again that this bag is trendy. This is a bag that’s been designed for women who don’t want to carry a traditional diaper bag because they don’t like the look. This bag allows moms to carry a diaper bag that doesn’t compromise their sense of style.
These bags are definitely well marketed on social media. I recommend following Fawn on Instagram if you’d like to see lots of gorgeous lifestyle photos of stylish parents on the go.
That’s it! The style-factor is the main reason I think Fawn bags are so popular. I love the style of the bag, but I do think this is a situation where you’re choosing style over function. I learned that I prefer carrying a more functional bag when I’m with my small kids.
How functional is the Fawn Design diaper bag?
The Fawn Design bag has a wide zippered opening. This is supposed to make it easier for you to see everything inside the bag. However, I feel that it creates the sense that I have dropped everything into an abyss. When I carry the Fawn bag, I have to take everything out of the bag before I can find anything. A solution to this problem is to simply buy extra inserts from other companies to bring more structure to the bag. Tote Savvy offers some great options for turning any bag into a functional diaper bag with their inserts. Or buy some of the smaller accessories bags sold by companies like this great JuJuBe Be set that comes with three smaller bags that help keep your bag organized.
Fawn Design bags have ten pockets: four outside and six inside, including a zippered pocket. Despite having all of these pockets, I feel that things get jumbled in the bag very easily. Sometimes it seems like the zippered pocket is the only pocket, and I have to put half of my arm into the bag to reach into that pocket.
Keep in mind that Fawn bags do not come with a changing mat. Fawn Design does sell a changing clutch with a changing mat and wipes case for $40. This more affordable diaper clutch is a nice option as well.
Should I Use A Fawn Design Bag as a Purse?
Absolutely, yes! As a matter of fact, I like using my Fawn bag more as a purse than as a diaper bag. I think it’s the perfect go-to handbag that still allows you to keep your hands free.
In their product descriptions, Fawn describes their signature bag as “a great anytime bag.” I agree! I like taking it with me when I’m having time to myself. It’s a comfortable bag to wear, especially when the straps are adjusted so the backpack rides a bit low. I prefer carrying a more functional diaper bag when I’m with my child. I definitely feel more stylish when I’m carrying the Fawn bag though!
What About the Fawn Design vs. Freshly Picked?
A classic question about two very stylish diaper bags! This gets asked a ton in every mom group I’m in, and the truth is, it’s up to your personal preference. I own both bags and like different things about each of them.
Fawn Diaper Bag Advantages
- Fawn bags wear more purse-like, whereas FP feels more like a diaper bag.
- The straps are a bit wider.
- The zipper doesn’t get twisted, which sometimes annoys me when using my FP bag.
Freshly Picked Diaper Bag Advantages
- The FP bag is definitely lighter than the Fawn, weighing 2.3lbs vs. 4lbs. This is a real difference, especially if you pack heavy!
- The FP bag is more spacious if you have multiple kids, or again if you pack a lot in your diaper bag.
- There’s a laptop sleeve and better interior organization.
They are both stylish bags and I like both for different reasons. It really comes down to this: If you’re looking for a bag that works as a diaper bag and as a purse, get the Fawn. If you’re looking for a spacious, functional diaper bag, go with Freshly Picked.
If you do want to check out the Freshly Picked diaper bag, check out my post about how to save 20% every time you shop at FP. That means getting the FP diaper bag for $140 instead of $179, which is pretty amazing.
