I thought it would be fun to cover a few of the smaller items I always keep with me. I think of these things as cheap thrills that bring me just a bit more joy or ease while I’m out running errands. Everything here costs under $10, so they’re low commitment products that are easy to try out.
Cheap Thrill #1: Baggu Reusable Shopping Bag
The Baggu is my go-to reusable shopping bag. I use it for quick grocery trips and walks to the farmer’s market, but it’s also been useful at the beach. Just like Bumkin bibs, my Baggu bag folds into a tiny square and takes up very little space in my diaper bag. I love my Baggu so much that I often buy them as small gift for friends and family!
Cheap Thrill #2: Munchkin Arm & Hammer Diaper Dispenser & Refill Bags
This is a genius product. I hook this little dispenser to my diaper bag and as a result, I always have a place to put dirty diapers, wet clothes, or other messy items that I don’t want floating around my diaper bag. I like these for any situation where you might otherwise be searching for a garbage can. I used them most heavily during the newborn stage, when babies need diaper changes everywhere you go and every time you turn around.
Cheap Thrill #3: Indestructible Picture Books
I love having things to entertain my toddler in a pinch. Indestructibles are perfect for the diaper bag because they’re very thin and lightweight. They’re virtually impossible to destroy. Spill things on them, teethe on them, it will all be just fine.
Cheap Thrill #4: Honest Company Hand Sanitizer
A natural companion to the dispenser, this hand sanitizer is perfect for diaper changes on the go. But I’m glad I have it in all kinds of situations. I keep one in my diaper bag and another in my car. The orange blossom scent smells so delicious. It’s the best smelling hand sanitizer I’ve ever used and it doesn’t dry out my hands. Whenever I use it, people ask me where to get it.
Cheap Thrill #5: Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes
As a new parent I limited plastic battery-operated toys with flashing lights and glaring music as much as possible. This toy was the exception. It is made of plastic and yes, it features flashing colored lights and electronic music. But it helped me many times when my baby was tiny. She loved staring at it and waving her arms as it played all the hits. There was honestly a point that I would not leave home without it.
Cheap Thrill #6: Colorful Band-Aids
At this stage I’m more likely to be the one that needs a Band-Aid when we’re out. I love having these bright bandages on hand for those moments when, for instance, I’ve chosen inappropriate footwear. (I am getting better at choosing appropriate footwear)
Cheap Thrill #7: Bumkins Waterproof Super Bib
I’m a big fan of the portability of these waterproof bibs. They fold into a tiny square and take up very little space in the diaper bag. They wipe clean easily, and if they get especially messy I just throw them in a Munchkin bag and wash them when I get home. These waterproof bibs come in many different patterns and colors. When I know I always have a bib on hand, I’m more likely to be flexible about how my day of errands unfolds.
Do you keep any pick-me-ups in your diaper bag? Or do you prefer to keep your bag as light as possible? I always carry a snack container and plenty of wipes.
