Dough Parlour is a natural play dough company based in Canada that makes 100% non-toxic scented play dough. Their dough is made from all-natural ingredients: wheat flour, sea salt, vegetable oil, natural food extracts, and bakery-grade food coloring. All of their scents are amazing and they don’t use any synthetic or artificial fragrances in their dough. Of the many natural play dough kits I’ve tried over the years, Dough Parlour makes my absolute favorite. On their website, they offer a large variety of scented play doughs that you can buy in individual cups or bundle together in sets. They also offer accessories like dough cutters and rolling pins.
The Best Natural Play Dough
I’ve tried making my own natural play dough at home. The results have been fine, but not fabulous. I used food coloring to dye my dough and the colors I ended up with weren’t always quite as vibrant as I’d hoped. I don’t love the salty scent of most play doughs and I even tried scenting my homemade dough with essential oils. Again, the results were mixed. But I still didn’t want to buy traditional play dough at the store and wanted to find the best natural play dough I could.
I tried several brands from small shops before taking a chance on Dough Parlour. Some of the doughs I tried had more elaborate designs in the dough, which was fun. I found some brands have a short shelf-life and a high price tag, which was a combination I didn’t particularly like.
When the beautiful Dough Parlour gift set arrived in the mail, I was immediately impressed with the fun packaging. I still prefer to store the dough cups in the gift set packaging because it helps my craft area stay more organized. But what really impressed me was the quality of the dough. This non-toxic play dough is super smooth and easy to work with. The colors of the dough are bright and vibrant. You can buy dough in every color of the rainbow, from cherry red to grape purple. I highly recommend buying a nice spectrum of colors to expand the possibilities for play. But what really stands out to me is how amazing Dough Parlour doughs smell. It’s such a fun sensory experience to work with dough that feels, looks, and smells good.
I recommend starting out with a Parlour pack of six or more. You can customize your box to select the scents that most appeal to you. Add on a playmat or two (the personalized play mat is a best-seller) and a little wooden rolling pin and you’re ready to up-level the sensory play in your home.
Since purchasing our initial gift set, I’ve added seasonal scents every few months. The Halloween kit from Dough Parlour was a huge hit with my kids. The scents included seasonal favorites such as black licorice, pumpkin spice, and caramel apple. The kit came with a fun (not scary!) oversized dough mat and two fun dough cutters. I’m always looking for age-appropriate ways to celebrate Halloween and this kit worked out perfectly.
How long does Dough Parlour last?
This is such a good question! I think this varies widely depending on your usage, storage, and climate. I’ve heard some people say that they refrigerate their natural play dough to make it last longer. When we use our natural play dough frequently, the color stays vibrant and the dough still feels fresh. I’m also very careful to be sure that I’ve sealed the lid tightly when we’re cleaning up. Our first set lasted about six months of frequent play before I happily replaced it. On their FAQ page, Dough Parlour provides some helpful tips on how to keep your dough fresh.
